Teaching reading in a way that works well for a specific learning style offers your child a variety of ways to learn and and can help him develop a lifelong love of reading and learning.
We all have elements of different learning styles, but one usually stands out as our predominant style. No one learning style is better than any other. Trying to fit every child into the same mold can lead to frustration for you AND your kids.
While understanding your child's style helps you take advantage of his strengths, it is also important to give him opportunities to strengthen his weaknesses. Even if you're sure your child is a visual learner, make sure to engage him in auditory or kinesthetic activities and experiences as well. After all, when he's out in the real world and in school he will have to learn in all kinds of different environments.
Make sure your children have many opportunities to use ALL of the different learning styles so they can develop to their full capabilities. A good guideline is to allow your kids to use their preferred style when learning critical information and to practice other learning styles for less important things.
Beginning as early as 2 years old you can enhance your children’s reading success by identifying their different learning styles. This information can help you play with your children (choose games, toys and activities) in a way that enhances their learning strengths and helps them as early as possible develop a love of learning.
The earlier children discover what learning style works best for them, the more likely they will have self confidence and success in their learning throughout their school years and beyond. As a parent, you can help set them on this path to success. BUT MOST OF ALL … MAKE LEARNING INTERESTING AND FUN TO KEEP YOUR KIDS ENGAGED AND MOTIVATED.
Remember, understanding your child’s preferred learning style is a very helpful tool for teaching reading, but don’t limit him by labeling him with just one style. After all, none of us use only one learning style; we all have a complex combination of ways to process information - which can also change over time. So adapting your child’s activities and assessing his learning style over time is very beneficial to make the most of his learning.
Labeling doesn’t serve a purpose by itself, but understanding the different types of learners can be valuable in helping your kids handle information more effectively.
As a parent, it's also important to understand your own learning style because your way of learning may not be the best way for your child to learn. You may need a neat and quiet environment to learn but your child may do better with the radio blaring in his cluttered room. If that works for him, let it be okay.
If you are dealing with a struggling reader, using your child's learning style preference can be a great tool in finding the best teaching methods for his individual needs. It gives you an edge in motivating them to want to learn. Use their preferred style to engage them so they WANT to learn to read.
Teachers have too many students to have an individualized teaching method for different types of learners. So, as a parent, you can supplement your child's learning at home by understanding how he learns the best. This can mean the difference between getting by and thriving.
The three principal different learning styles are Visual (lookers), Auditory (listeners) and Kinesthetic (movers). Which learning style fits your child best?
